WHERE IS PUBLISHING GOING?

Posted by Daniel S. on Saturday, October 29, 2016, In : Publishing

As the owner of a small but well-established publishing house producing enduring literary works, I'm often asked where I think the publishing industry is ultimately headed. Twenty years ago that question would have been greeted with a quixotic lilt of the head. Today it elicits mainly a puzzled half-frown.

The year saw SBAP and it's subsidiaries once again well in the black despite the bleak economic environment. For example, while Barnes and Noble closed it's Kahala Mall bookstore, SBH at Hawaii Kai and SBH at Kokua Market (University District) this year effectively doubled our online sales income, as well as 2013 author royalties. We fully expect to fill a good porti...

Whenever a prospective author asks me, ''What would your publishing house do to promote my book?'' I have to take a minute, breathe deep, and remember that to many, it really means, ''How would you make people buy my book so I can retire a millionaire and never have to write another?''

AUTHORS AND OTHERS

That isn't to say that all potential or seasoned authors think this way, but a growing number of new; young writers seem to. In the world of publishing, there are many writers, and likewise wh...
