COVID-19 ENCOURAGES SAVANT/AIGNOS

Posted by Daniel Janik on Thursday, March 26, 2020, In : major events
There's plenty of "bad" happening just now in regard to COVID-19 and it's myriad effects on everyone's lives. Yet, for every catastrophe, there's always a silver lining if one can but see it. In our case, we're busy fast-tracking publications to help provide something for quarantined and elective "stay-at-homers," namely the finest in enduring literary works to help entertain the heart and exercise the mind. No mere spoon-fed, mind-numbing movies or videos (I'll admit to an occasional one mys...

THE FIRST DINOSAUR FALLS!

Posted by Daniel S. on Sunday, June 9, 2019, In : Publishing
People in the publishing business have well been aware for several years now that Barnes and Noble (B&N), the last of the huge bookstore chain dinosaurs, has been stumbling. Sometime ago, B&N announced that it was changing its emphasis from books to gifts, while struggling to keep it's 600+ "brick and mortar" bookstores in business. Just recently, Elliott Management Corporation announced (https://www.wsj.com/articles/barnes-noble-to-be-acquired-by-elliott-management-for-6-50-a-share-115599068...

AND THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THE ELECTION...

Posted by Daniel S. on Tuesday, November 8, 2016, In : major events

I was asked yesterday by a friend who I was going to vote for. An innocuous question, to my surprise, asked in a decidedly acrimonious voice. It was as if whomever I voted for, if it wasn't the same as the person he voted for, our relationship, perhaps even our lifelong friendship would suddenly fall into doubt.

First, like many Americans, I'm sick of the tsunami of pathos, ethos, keiros and personally interpreted numos, and the almost total lack of the only kind of argument that has any tr...

Posted by Daniel S. on Monday, May 5, 2014, In : Editor-in-Chief
Several postings ago, I had the pleasure of introducing Dr. Suzanne Langford as a Savant editor. Since then she's not only been busy editing, but has served successfully as an interim Editor-in-Chief. Now, I'm pleased to announce her appointment to the position of Editor-in-Chief. No "interim" anymore.

The Editor-in-Chief (EIC) job at Savant Books and Publications is a complex and demanding one. Not only does it require knowledge and experience with editing, but it also involves selection of w...

RISING TO THE OCCASION

Posted by Daniel S. Janik on Monday, February 17, 2014, In : Publishing
Finding a safe place on today's book publishing battlefield is no easy task; more so, charting a growth position for an uncertain future. For example, bookstores, mainly the large and regional chain stores, which have long been the mainstays of retail book sales, are disappearing at an alarming rate (a la Borders and now Barnes and Noble). The dwindling 3,000 small, independent bookstores are being heavily stressed to stay open as well. But that's nothing new -- it's been coming for a long t...

Welcome Aboard, Suzanne Langford!

Posted by Daniel S. on Thursday, January 9, 2014, In : New Editor
In the previous blog, I mentioned we have two more editors finishing editor training, and it is my pleasure to introduce Suzanne Langford, our newest Savant editor.

Suzanne says,"As a Savant Books and Publications editor, my role is to ensure your work is beyond even your expectations! I'll be there every step of the way, helping you say exactly what you mean. Tom Robbins says it well: 'Challenge every single sentence; challenge it for lucidity, accuracy, originality, and cadence. If it doesn...

BOOK PROMOTION FOR AND WITH AUTHORS

Posted by Daniel S. on Monday, April 8, 2013, In : Publishing
Whenever a prospective author asks me, ''What would your publishing house do to promote my book?'' I have to take a minute, breathe deep, and remember that to many, it really means, ''How would you make people buy my book so I can retire a millionaire and never have to write another?''

AUTHORS AND OTHERS

That isn't to say that all potential or seasoned authors think this way, but a growing number of new; young writers seem to. In the world of publishing, there are many writers, and likewise wh...

PUTTING ON THE SPELL

Posted by Daniel S. on Wednesday, September 5, 2012, In : major events
These days, in today's world of publishing, "getting published" and having one's book appear on a wide variety of established sales channels has gotten much easier, while garnering author name and book title recognition so interested readers can locate an author's work has gotten much harder. While publishers struggle with the vastly increased approaches to publication including self-, vanity, POD (print on demand), electronic and traditional publishing models, distributors for ways to identi...

Savant Produces First CD Recording

Posted by Daniel S. on Friday, September 9, 2011, In : major events
It seemed inevitable to me that Savant Books and Publications would eventually expand into the CD (music and audiobook) and DVD areas. Now it's happening. With the release of R. Page Kaufman's contemporary trombone jazz CD entitled TROPIC OF CALIFORNIA (CD), a musical companion to his multi-award winning book TROPIC OF CALIFORNIA - THE STRAINS OF STRAUSS (Savant 2008), Savant Books and Publications enters a new era.

Congratulations, R. Page Kaufman and thank you for pioneering in the new, exp...

The Fine Edge Between Fiction and Non-Fiction - Bentley Gates' THE BAHRAIN CONSPIRACY Rises Again

Posted by Daniel S. on Sunday, May 22, 2011, In : major events
It's not often a publisher hears that a fiction book plot is so well-conceived that it ends up in "real life" contemporary international news, but that's exactly what has happened surrounding author Bentley Gates' action-adventure novel, THE BAHRAIN CONSPIRACY.

Al-Qaida Terrorist Plan Foretold in Author Bentley Gates' novel "The Bahrain Conspiracy"

Author Bentley Gates appears to have predicted a fiendish plot revealed in notes of Osama Bin Laden captured by SEAL Team Six.

Savent Books Available Through Ingram Distribution

Posted by Daniel S. on Monday, November 8, 2010, In : major events
I am pleased to announce that Savant books will now become available to independent and major chain bookstores worldwide through Ingram Distribution Company. What this means is that Ingram clients who request one book on spec or 100,000 books for regional bookstore distribution can now order them directly from Ingram. We have arranged for all new Savant releases to appear on the Ingram list. I estimate it should take, on the average, four months after release for an individual work to actuall...

Savant Books and Publications second afternoon coffee at Cafe 2600, featuring the release of Daniel S. Janik's children's book, A WHALE'S TALE, was a black T-shirt affair. About forty authors, editors, distributors, writers, University of Hawaii Students and public dropped by for coffee...and a whale of a good time.
